Root Canal Therapy in Maroubra

Root Canal Treatment in MaroubraWhen Do You Need Root Canal Treatment?

Significant damage to the protective layer of tooth enamel can allow bacteria to get into your tooth. Once inside, they will be able to easily penetrate the pulp chamber, right in the centre of the tooth. The pulp chamber contains the tooth’s nerve and blood vessels, and infection can cause toothache. Trauma to a tooth can also injure the nerve tissue in the pulp chamber, resulting in inflammation that can cause toothache.

Is the Treatment Painful?

A tooth infection or inflammation can be very painful and root canal therapy will help relieve this discomfort, removing the infection and saving the tooth from extraction. The actual procedure shouldn’t feel any worse than having a filling. We will do everything possible to make sure you do not feel any discomfort during treatment and afterwards your tooth should feel much more comfortable, although just like a filling it may take a day or two for it to settle down after treatment.

How Much Does a Root Canal Treatment Cost?

The cost of root canal therapy can vary according to the complexity of your treatment. It depends on how many root canals must be cleaned and disinfected. While your front teeth only have a single tooth root, a large molar can have 3-4 and sometimes these root canals will be quite curved and more difficult to treat. Typically, treatment can cost anywhere between $1000 and $2000. Our dentist in Maroubra will be able to give you a more accurate quote after carefully assessing your tooth.

Root Canal Treatment procedure is used to save your tooth from extraction. With the innovations in dental medicine, and the development of specially designed instruments, root canal therapy is completed in as little as two visits to our practice.

The prime objective of this procedure is to save and restore your tooth if it has damage caused by:

  • Deep decay
  • The result of untreated gum disease
  • An injury, causing the nerve tissue to die
  • A major Fracture involving the nerve

Without effective and quick treatment, any of these situations may cause extensive pain and an abscess may develop, this will need to be drained to prevent the bacterial toxins that build-up at the base of the root from extending and infecting your jawbone resulting in severe problems. In cases where the infection has not been addressed the surrounding bone and your overall health may be affected from the chronic infection and inflammation.

Treatment Procedure

Following a thorough examination and assessment we will plan for the most appropriate treatment procedure then a local anaesthetic is administered to numb the surrounding area.

Root Canal Treatment involves drilling a small opening in the tooth to completely remove the infected nerve tissue. The canal is then cleaned, shaped, sterilised and sealed with a filling material; much like a cavity or hole in your tooth would be filled. This ‘canal sealant’ will protect your tooth from further infection.

Once your infected tooth has been cleaned and filled, the next step is to restore its strength by placing a porcelain crown. Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment are not as strong and may fracture, so a crown is the ideal restorative solution.

Root canal treatment can be a very successful procedure that can save a severely infected tooth from being extracted.
