Wisdom Teeth Extraction in Maroubra

Wisdom Teeth Removal in MaroubraWhen Does a Wisdom Tooth Need to be Extracted?

We will need to remove a wisdom tooth if there is an infection or pain or if the tooth is causing damage to neighbouring teeth. Often this decision will be made after our dentist has examined x-rays of your teeth showing their positon in your jawbone. Sometimes we will remove a wisdom tooth that has only been able to partially erupt and where it is still partly covered by your gums. The flap of gum tissue still partly covering the tooth can easily trap food and bacteria, making it harder to keep the tooth clean and increasing the risk of infection and decay.

Is the Procedure Painful?

We will make sure your wisdom tooth is properly numbed with local anesthetic before this procedure begins so you should not feel any pain. Our dental team will take every precaution to keep you as comfortable as possible.

How Long Does the Procedure and Recovery Take?

The actual procedure to remove wisdom teeth is quite quick and our aim is to ensure treatment is as minimally invasive as possible. If necessary, we will sometimes remove wisdom teeth in several sections as this helps to ensure the process is smoother and more comfortable for you. It is normal to experience some initial discomfort during healing but this should be relatively minor and most people will find recovery is quite quick and uneventful. We will give you lots of information on how to care for your mouth during healing and of course we are always here to answer any questions you may have during this time.

How Much Will a Tooth Extraction Cost?

The cost of your tooth extraction will depend on the complexity of the procedure and the time required by our dentist to remove the tooth. Typical costs range from $300-$500.

Tooth extractions are best avoided but often they are necessary for a number of reasons, these include; extensive tooth decay, major infection and extreme mobility.

In addition to this, extractions of impacted or problematic wisdom teeth are routinely performed, as are extractions of some permanent teeth to make space for orthodontic treatment.

The procedure will follow a thorough examination and radiographic assessment. For your complete comfort, a local anaesthetic is administered to numb the surrounding area. After the tooth has been removed, you’ll be given an information sheet with post-operative care instructions. In most cases we also ask that your return to our practice for a follow-up consultation to check that the area is healing.

Many patients experience extreme anxiety when an extraction is recommended. This anxiety can be alleviated by advising us of your fears and concerns so that we can assist in making the procedure as comfortable as possible for you. In general, most patients find the procedure much easier than expected and the recovery time minimal.
