Oral Health and Heart Disease
Poor dental health can cause a host of problems throughout your body and recently it has been proven that if you have a chronic infection in your mouth; harmful bacteria can spread through the bloodstream potentially causing or contributing to a many number of systemic problems.
Whilst we have always treated infections and inflammation within the mouth seriously, we now have extra cause for concern.
Gum disease, known as periodontal disease is an infection caused by the accumulation of plaque and bacteria in the areas surrounding the teeth. The body’s natural defence against infection is inflammation. This inflammatory response can cause the gums to bleed and this infection will eventually destroy the bone and soft tissues supporting the teeth.
Since medical research has uncovered the possible link between heart disease and periodontal disease, there have been many other findings. These include links to pregnancy complications, difficult diabetes management and strokes.
Now more than ever, it’s critical to practice good oral hygiene habits to keep infections at bay. Your daily routine should include a routine of brushing and flossing. You should also remember to visit us for regular check-ups.
