Clenching & Grinding Solutions

Bruxism is the medical term for grinding, gnashing or clenching your teeth and can be a harmful and destructive condition affecting both adults and children.

With bruxism, some people unconsciously clench their teeth together during the day, most often this is during times of stress or when they feel anxious or tense. This is different from tooth grinding or clenching that occurs at night, which is called sleep bruxism.

Bruxism may be mild and may not even require treatment. However, in some cases it can be frequent and severe enough to lead to jaw pain, headaches, damaged teeth and other related conditions. Unfortunately, people with sleep bruxism usually aren’t aware of their habit, so they aren’t diagnosed with the condition until problems occur.

The signs and symptoms of bruxism include:

  • Tooth Wear
  • Tooth Breakage
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • Headaches
  • Jaw pain or jaw clicking

The appropriate treatment for you will depend on what is causing the problem. By asking careful questions and thoroughly examining your teeth and lifestyle habits, we can help determine the potential source of your bruxism. Based on the amount of tooth damage and the cause, we may suggest:

Nightguard

Custom-made to fit your teeth, the addition slips over the upper teeth and protects them from grinding against the lower teeth.

The adjustment of high spots

Following assessment we may adjust areas of your teeth to encourage a more balanced bite. Often bruxing is the body’s way of trying to adjust an unbalanced or unfavourable bite. If you feel that you may be suffering from the effects of Bruxism, please contact us for a consultation to discuss your concerns.
